I will probably write more about Curtis Yarvin. He is an American political philosopher who is ten years older than me and is often read by the Trump administration. Like me, he was influenced by libertarian ideas and read Ludwig von Mises. Later, however, under the influence of Hans-Hermann Hoppe, he turned to the idea that the world should consist entirely of small monarchical states. Political philosophy deals only with theoretical models that have little to do with reality. However, political philosophers can influence politicians in their decisions. This philosopher is worth studying because those currently in power in America listen to him.
It is said that Yarvin believes that power in the United States lies with the media and some universities. I can partly agree with this: at the very least, these institutions are responsible for shaping people's worldview. They are the general source of knowledge.
The view that a world consisting entirely of small states is the best was also shared in discussions by Austrian libertarians. Hoppe is not actually a staunch monarchist, but he considers monarchy to be better than democracy; he would prefer a ‘natural order,’ whatever that may be. Yarvin differs from Hoppe in that he explicitly supports monarchy, which he believes may well have autocratic traits. In my opinion, it remains to be discussed whether this would really be better than democracy.
Basically, I have realised that I was labouring under an illusion for a long time when I believed that Austria could become a liberal country and that my own idiosyncratic ideas of liberalism could perhaps even be implemented. Yarvin, however, is read by the powerful in America; he has influence. That should not be underestimated. For that reason alone, it cannot be a mistake to take a closer look at his thinking – and that is what I intend to do.
