At school we learn that we can be happy and proud to live in a democracy.
In reality, "democracy" is an empty word. Whether education or business, in Austria everything is organized in a very authoritarian way.
In contrast to the People's Republic of China, mass executions are not the order of the day. But dissidents and dissenters also risk a lot in our country, for example the loss of their jobs, which can threaten the very existence of some people.
Here, too, it is quite common to think that the purpose of life is to go to work. Those who are not able or willing to work have no sense in their lives. Leisure time is considered a luxury.
I know I'm not telling you anything new, I'm just summarizing the known in clear words.
The terrible thing is that in the meantime I have realized that most people are quite satisfied if they have the opportunity to be followers in such a system. Travellers do not set the policy guidelines, but they benefit from the system and support it because for them the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Rather than having real discussions, they engage in sham debates in order to sound out the dissidents and possibly denounce them (in the expectation of thus rising higher in the favor of the truly powerful).
