In the following short essay I would like to explain why I am politically involved and what my basic political attitude is.
By and large, I spent a good childhood in Austria. I was born in Vienna in 1983 to two Austrian citizens. I never had any difficulties at school because learning was easy for me and I enjoyed it.
Naive as I was, I took it for granted that my parents had a job, went to work regularly and had a good income. It was only in the last few years before graduating from high school that I gained a more realistic view of the world through extensive reading of the print media.
At times I was afraid of working life, although I had been a good student, because I now knew that one could lose one's job not only because of laziness or sloppiness, but also because of economic difficulties of the company, because of intrigues of colleagues, because of rash statements, etc. I was also frightened by the fact that the media often said that you had to work as "quickly and efficiently" as possible and always deliver "maximum performance".
I also noticed over time that in our society it is not really desirable to think freely and express one's own opinion. There are certain ideologies, whether they are thought buildings of a religious nature or thought buildings of a political nature, and one often finds oneself in a position in life where one has to admit to an ideology or at least pretend to be a follower of it - otherwise one risks being disadvantaged even in spite of good performance.
I would like to see people growing up today no longer have to struggle with these problems and worries. It should only count what someone can do, not how he thinks. I want a society in which there is genuine freedom of expression and tolerance towards those who think differently. And I see the best way to make such a society a reality is by becoming involved in a liberal party. But: not only in the interest of the party, but most of all in the interest of the population.
